Adenosylhomocysteinase pseudogene 5 (AHCYP5) is a processed pseudogene related to the functional adenosylhomocysteinase gene (AHCY), which encodes an enzyme responsible for the reversible hydrolysis of S-adenosylhomocysteine to adenosine and homocysteine[2][6]. While the active gene AHCY is involved in important metabolic and methylation reactions, pseudogenes such as AHCYP5 arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition events and generally lack protein-coding capacity[6]. These pseudogenes are not believed to be expressed as functional proteins and, to date, there is no evidence that AHCYP5 has biological activity, disease involvement, or utility as a therapeutic target. There is no evidence to suggest that AHCYP5 functions as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, or that it is involved in drug interactions, clinical biomarkers, or disease pathology. Most available references to adenosylhomocysteinase pseudogenes, whether in human or rodent genomes, describe them as inactive genetic elements[6].
