Overview

The Adenovirus hexon protein-derived peptide-MHC complex is a specialized immunological target consisting of a fragment of the adenovirus hexon capsid protein bound to a Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecule on the surface of infected cells (PubMed: 18436440). The hexon protein is the most abundant protein in the adenovirus virion and is a dominant target for the host cellular immune response (PubMed: 15140982). In patients with compromised immune systems, such as those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, adenovirus can lead to severe, often fatal, disseminated infections (PubMed: 20625011). Therapeutic interventions targeting this complex include virus-specific T-cells (VSTs), T-cell receptor-like (TCR-like) antibodies, and CAR-T cells designed to recognize specific hexon peptides (e.g., H9) in the context of HLA-A*02:01 (PubMed: 28351917). These therapies aim to provide targeted antiviral activity by inducing the lysis of infected cells, thereby reducing viral load and preventing organ damage.
