Adenovirus Serotype-Specific Immune Response

Overview

The adenovirus serotype-specific immune response refers to the host's adaptive and innate immune mechanisms that recognize and respond to specific serotypes of human adenoviruses (HAdVs). Adenoviruses are a diverse group of DNA viruses, with over 50 human serotypes classified into several species. The immune system can distinguish between these serotypes, leading to variable responses in terms of antibody production, T cell activation, and overall immunity. The primary biological role is the recognition and elimination of adenoviral infections. Both humoral (antibody-mediated) and cellular (T cell-mediated) arms of the adaptive immune system are involved. Innate immunity also plays a crucial role in initial detection through pattern recognition receptors. Adaptive responses include production of neutralizing antibodies specific for viral capsid proteins, activation of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes targeting infected cells, and induction of regulatory T cells. Immune response specificity is largely determined by differences in capsid proteins among HAdV serotypes. Preexisting immunity poses challenges for gene therapy or vaccination strategies using common HAdV vectors.
