Adenylyl Cyclase Type 1 (AC1)

Target
AC1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transmembrane enzyme, Class IIIa adenylyl cyclase
01

Overview

Adenylyl Cyclase Type 1 (AC1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of ATP to cAMP, a key second messenger in cellular signaling pathways. It is specifically activated by calcium ions through calmodulin binding, making it a calmodulin-sensitive adenylyl cyclase. AC1 plays critical roles in the central nervous system, including regulation of neural circuit patterning, involvement in memory acquisition and learning, and modulation of circadian rhythm-related functions. Disruption of AC1 leads to defects in neural pattern formation. Pharmacologically targeting AC1 has shown promise as a novel analgesic strategy.
