Adenylate kinase 1 (AK1) is an essential enzyme responsible for catalyzing the reversible transfer of phosphate groups between ATP and AMP, maintaining energy homeostasis by regulating adenine nucleotide ratios in cells[3][6]. It is highly expressed in tissues with high energy demand, such as skeletal muscle, brain, and red blood cells[3]. AK1 is critical for cellular energy metabolism, and mutations in the AK1 gene can cause a rare form of nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia in humans[3]. The protein functions as a monomer and consists of several domains involved in binding ATP, AMP, and phosphate transfer[1][2]. Although not widely targeted by approved drugs, its structural and functional properties make it a potential target for drug discovery related to energy metabolism and inherited metabolic disorders[4][6].
