Overview

The adenylosuccinate synthase pseudogene is a segment of DNA located in the human genome that closely resembles the functional adenylosuccinate synthase gene but contains disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) that render it incapable of producing a functional enzyme. Pseudogenes are a common genomic feature, formed through gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and persist as non-functional relics, often referred to as "junk DNA." They have no known biological activity and are not involved in cellular metabolic pathways, drug interactions, or disease mechanisms. The functional gene (adenylosuccinate synthase, encoded by ADSS or ADSS2) plays a critical role in purine nucleotide biosynthesis, but the pseudogene is not expressed as an active protein and thus is not a target for therapeutic intervention or drug development.
