Adenylyl cyclase Rv1625c (Cya) is a membrane-anchored enzyme from Mycobacterium tuberculosis that catalyzes the conversion of ATP to cAMP, a key second messenger involved in cellular signaling. It is considered an evolutionary ancestor of mammalian adenylyl cyclases and serves as a model for studying their structure and function. Rv1625c-generated cAMP is central to Mtb’s ability to sense environmental changes during infection and modulates bacterial growth on cholesterol. Pharmacological modulation of this enzyme could be therapeutically beneficial against tuberculosis infections resistant to conventional treatments.
