Adenylyl cyclase type 6 (AC6) is a membrane-associated enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of ATP to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a critical second messenger involved in numerous cellular signaling pathways. AC6 is part of the adenylyl cyclase family, which plays essential roles in transmembrane signaling and is regulated by G protein-coupled receptor activity. It is expressed in heart, vasculature, spinal cord, brain, lungs, kidney, liver, thyroid, and bone. Its activity is regulated by G proteins, calcium, and phosphorylation. Altered expression/activity of ADCY6 are associated with Lethal Congenital Contracture Syndrome 8 (LCCS8), Hypomyelination Neuropathy-Arthrogryposis Syndrome and cancer prognosis. It also plays roles in cardiovascular disease risk and asthma.
