Adherence to exercise regimens

Molecular classification
Other, Behavioral endpoint
01

Overview

Adherence to exercise regimens is defined as the extent to which a person's behavior corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a healthcare provider regarding physical activity (World Health Organization, 2003). It is a behavioral outcome rather than a molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter; therefore, it cannot be engaged by traditional pharmacological agents. Consistent adherence is critical for the primary and secondary prevention of chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension (NIH, PMC4129661). Factors influencing adherence are multifactorial, encompassing psychological motivation, socioeconomic status, and physical capability (PubMed, 22441968). In clinical research, improving adherence is a major goal of behavioral interventions and digital health technologies rather than drug development.
