Adherent-Invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC)

Target
AIEC

Overview

Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) is a pathotype of E. coli characterized by its ability to adhere to and invade intestinal epithelial cells, as well as survive and replicate within macrophages without inducing host cell death. AIEC is implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), particularly Crohn’s disease (CD). Potential therapeutic strategies for targeting AIEC include phage therapy, antibiotics, and antiadhesion molecules.
