AdvA

Bacterial cell division protein, DNA-binding protein

Overview

Adhesion and cell division protein A (AdvA) is an essential protein in Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) that is vital for cell viability and proper division (Beilharz et al., 2012). It is primarily involved in coordinating the assembly of the cell division machinery at the septum, specifically influencing Z-ring formation and chromosome segregation (UniProt Q9A144). AdvA is highly conserved among pyogenic streptococci but lacks close homologs in humans, making it an attractive candidate for the development of novel antimicrobial agents (PubMed PMID: 22493205). Research indicates that depletion of AdvA leads to severe defects in cell morphology, including filamentation and impaired DNA distribution, ultimately resulting in bacterial death. As S. pyogenes is responsible for a wide range of human diseases from pharyngitis to life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis, targeting AdvA offers a potential strategy to combat antibiotic-resistant strains.
