Adhesion and division protein (AdvP)

The Adhesion and division protein (AdvP) is a 45-kDa surface-anchored protein in Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) that is essential for both bacterial replication and host colonization [1]. AdvP is localized at the division septum, where it interacts with the bacterial divisome to facilitate proper cell wall synthesis and daughter cell separation [1, 2]. In addition to its structural role, AdvP serves as a critical adhesin that mediates the attachment of S. pyogenes to human respiratory epithelial cells, a vital step in the initiation of infection [1]. Because AdvP is indispensable for bacterial growth and is accessible on the cell surface, it is considered a high-priority target for the development of novel antimicrobial agents and vaccine candidates [2, 3]. Currently, there are no FDA-approved drugs targeting AdvP, but research into small molecule inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies is ongoing to address the threat of antibiotic-resistant streptococcal strains [1].
