Adipogenic transcription factor

Molecular classification
Transcription factor
01

Overview

Adipogenic transcription factor" is not a single molecule but refers collectively to a group of **transcription factors** that regulate the process of **adipogenesis**, the differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes. The most prominent members include peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor gamma (**PPARγ**), CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins (**C/EBPs**, especially C/EBPα), Krüppel-like factors (**KLFs**), signal transducer and activator of transcription proteins (**STATs**), GATA family members, early B cell factor 1 (**EBF1**), interferon regulatory factors (**IRFs**) among others. These proteins orchestrate the complex gene expression programs required for fat cell development, lipid storage, and maintenance. While some are positive regulators (e.g., PPARγ, C/EBPα) essential for initiating and maintaining the adipocyte phenotype, others act as inhibitors or modulators at various stages. Because "Adipogenic transcription factor" is not a specific protein but rather an umbrella term for several distinct molecules with overlapping functions in fat biology, it is not considered a direct therapeutic target itself; instead, individual members such as PPARγ are established drug targets in metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes.
