Overview

Adiponectin, C1Q and collagen domain containing (ADIPOQ) is a secreted protein produced exclusively by adipose tissue. It circulates in plasma and structurally resembles collagens and complement factor C1q. Adiponectin is a multifunctional adipokine regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity, and exerting anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-atherogenic effects. It activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways in muscle and liver, enhances glucose and fatty acid usage, and antagonizes inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha. Clinical interest in adiponectin centers on its role in metabolic diseases, cardiovascular disease, and as a biomarker for insulin resistance and risk assessment.

Mechanism of action
