Overview

ADIPOQ antisense RNA 1 (ADIPOQ-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that overlaps with the ADIPOQ (adiponectin) gene and acts primarily as a post-transcriptional regulator of ADIPOQ expression[4][6]. It does not encode a protein and is classified as an antisense lncRNA[4][5]. Genome-wide association studies indicate that genetic variation at the ADIPOQ locus can influence the expression of ADIPOQ-AS1, which modulates adiponectin biology and potentially regulates adipogenic and metabolic processes in adipose tissue[2][4]. Functional studies suggest that ADIPOQ-AS1 can inhibit adipogenesis by forming a duplex with ADIPOQ mRNA, leading to suppression of ADIPOQ translation and fat cell differentiation[6]. It is not currently considered a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, nor are any drugs directly known to target it. ADIPOQ-AS1 may play a disease role as a regulator in conditions like adiponectin deficiency, but its potential as a biomarker or drug target requires further study[2][5].
