Overview

Adipose tissue thermogenesis is a multi-molecular biological process whereby specialized fat tissue (primarily brown and beige adipocytes) dissipates chemical energy as heat, contributing to energy expenditure and body temperature regulation. This process is primarily mediated by mitochondrial proteins such as uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in response to cold stimuli or catecholamine signaling, and is regulated by an extensive network of transcription factors (such as PRDM16, PPARγ, and PGC-1α), enzymes (e.g., hormone-sensitive lipase), and cellular signaling pathways. Enhancing adipose tissue thermogenesis is being explored as a strategy to increase energy expenditure and combat metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
