Overview

ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating protein 3 (ARFGAP3) is an enzyme that acts as a GTPase-activating protein for ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1), a member of the small GTPase family involved in vesicle trafficking. ARFGAP3 is primarily associated with the Golgi apparatus, where it regulates the early secretory pathway of proteins by promoting hydrolysis of ARF1-bound GTP, leading to the dissociation of coat proteins from Golgi-derived membranes and vesicles. This dissociation enables the fusion of vesicles with target compartments. The activity of ARFGAP3 is sensitive to phospholipids, and multiple transcript variants exist, encoding different isoforms. The gene was previously confused with ARFGAP1, a different but related gene.
