Overview

ADP-ribosylation factor-like GTPase 6 interacting protein 4 (ARL6IP4) is a nuclear protein involved in the regulation of alternative pre-mRNA splicing, including activation of distal 5′ splice sites or preferential use of proximal 3′ splice sites. It appears to participate in RNA binding processes that affect transcript maturation. While initially identified due to its interaction with GTPases, its main characterized role is as an arginine/serine-rich splicing regulator rather than a canonical receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Genetic studies implicate altered ARL6IP4 expression and splicing junctions in susceptibility to neuropsychiatric diseases, particularly schizophrenia, highlighting its broader contribution to neuronal mRNA processing and transcriptome dynamics. No targeted pharmacological agents or biomarkers are established for ARL6IP4, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic target in clinical practice.
