Overview

Adrenergic innervation refers to the supply of adrenergic nerve fibers, which release the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline) at synapses to stimulate adrenergic receptors on target tissues including smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, and central nervous system structures. This innervation underlies the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, such as increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and promoting the "fight or flight" response[5]. Adrenergic innervation is an anatomical and physiological phenomenon, not a druggable target itself. The actual molecular targets for therapeutic modulation are the adrenergic receptors (such as alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors), which are well-characterized G protein-coupled receptors involved in mediating the effects of catecholamines released by adrenergic nerves[4][2][8]. Critical note: - "Adrenergic innervation" is not a molecule, protein, gene, or receptor, but a physiological process. The common canonical targets for drug discovery or therapeutic intervention are the adrenergic receptors (e.g., adrenergic receptor alpha-1, adrenergic receptor beta-1, beta-2, etc.), not the "innervation" itself[8][4][2]. - For structured drug target data, information should be gathered under the specific types of adrenergic receptors, not "adrenergic innervation."
