Overview

The adrenergic nerve terminal is the specialized region at the end of an adrenergic nerve fiber where neurotransmitters—primarily norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and to a lesser extent epinephrine (adrenaline) and dopamine—are released into the synaptic cleft. These terminals are found in secondary neurons of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for mediating the "fight-or-flight" response. The neurotransmitters released from these terminals bind to adrenergic receptors on target tissues, leading to various physiological effects such as increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, pupil dilation, and modulation of glandular secretions. Drugs targeting adrenergic nerve terminals or their associated receptors play major roles in treating cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, arrhythmias, angina pectoris; they also have applications in managing asthma (via beta agonists). Dysregulation can contribute to conditions such as heart failure or hypertension due to excessive sympathetic activity.
