Adrenergic receptor alpha_2B (α2B adrenoceptor)

Target
α2B adrenoceptor
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

The adrenergic receptor alpha_2B is a G protein-coupled receptor and one of three highly homologous subtypes in the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor family. It is found predominantly on vascular smooth muscle where it mediates vasopressor effects such as vasoconstriction and blood pressure regulation. A common deletion variant lacking three glutamic acids has been linked to reduced basal metabolic rate in obese individuals and enhanced emotional memory formation.

Mechanism of action

Agonists activate the receptor, inhibiting adenylyl cyclase and reducing cyclic AMP levels. This leads to hyperpolarization of noradrenergic neurons, suppressing neural firing and norepinephrine release.
