Aeromonas caviae is a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the Aeromonadaceae family (Janda & Abbott, 2010). It is widely distributed in aquatic environments and is recognized as a significant cause of human gastroenteritis, particularly in children and those with underlying health conditions (StatPearls, 2023). While not a single molecular target itself, the organism is the focus of antimicrobial therapy, possessing various internal targets such as DNA gyrase and ribosomal subunits (PubMed). A. caviae is clinically notable for its intrinsic resistance to many penicillins and first-generation cephalosporins, mediated by chromosomal beta-lactamases (NIH). Its virulence is attributed to factors like aerolysin, proteases, and the ability to form robust biofilms, which facilitate environmental survival and host colonization (Wikipedia). In addition to intestinal disease, it can cause extraintestinal infections including wound infections and septicemia (Janda & Abbott, 2010). Effective treatment often requires the use of fluoroquinolones or third-generation cephalosporins, though resistance patterns are evolving (StatPearls, 2023).
