Agglutination of erythrocytes, commonly known as hemagglutination, is a biological process involving the clumping of red blood cells. This phenomenon occurs when specific antigens on the erythrocyte surface are cross-linked by multivalent binding agents, such as antibodies (agglutinins), lectins, or viral proteins like the influenza hemagglutinin (StatPearls, 2023). While it is not a specific therapeutic target molecule like a receptor or enzyme, it is a critical diagnostic phenomenon used extensively in clinical medicine. Hemagglutination serves as the basis for blood typing, cross-matching for transfusions, and the detection of various infectious agents (NIH, 2022). In pathological conditions such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia or hemolytic disease of the newborn, the process occurs in vivo due to the presence of autoantibodies or maternal antibodies, leading to cell destruction (PubMed, 2021). In laboratory settings, hemagglutination inhibition assays are vital for quantifying viral titers and evaluating the efficacy of vaccines and antiviral therapies. Consequently, while not a drug target itself, the monitoring and prevention of unwanted erythrocyte agglutination are essential for patient safety in hematology and transfusion medicine.
