Overview

Agkistrodon halys venom toxins are a complex mixture of bioactive proteins and peptides produced by the Siberian pit viper (Agkistrodon halys, also known as Gloydius halys) (Biochem J, 2004; Reptile Database). These toxins primarily target the hemostatic and nervous systems, leading to symptoms such as local tissue damage, systemic hemorrhage, and occasionally neurotoxicity (HKMJ, 2016; ResearchGate, 2026). The venom contains several major classes of proteins, including phospholipase A2 (PLA2), snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs), serine proteases, and disintegrins (Biochem J, 2004; MDPI, 2024). While these components are responsible for the pathological effects of envenomation, they are also of significant interest in pharmacology; for instance, disintegrins like agkistrostatin are studied for their ability to inhibit platelet aggregation, and protein C activators are explored for antithrombotic therapy (PMC, 2011; MDPI, 2024). Clinical management of envenomation involves the use of specific antivenoms that neutralize these toxins, alongside supportive care to manage complications like coagulopathy and organ failure (HKMJ, 2016; Taylor & Francis, 2022). Research into these toxins continues to provide insights into the development of novel anticoagulants and anti-cancer agents (PMC, 2018; PMC, 2011).
