Airway basal progenitor cells are multipotent epithelial stem cells residing in the basal layer of the airway epithelium. They express characteristic markers such as P63 and KRT5, possess extensive self-renewal and differentiation capacity, and maintain airway homeostasis and regeneration after injury. In response to damage, these cells can be activated to proliferate, migrate, and differentiate into secretory and ciliated cells essential for airway function. They are actively explored as a cell therapy for chronic airway diseases and fibrosis, with ongoing research into their roles in both healthy tissue repair and pathological remodeling[1][2][4][5].
