Airway Basal Progenitor Cells (ABPCs)

Target
ABPCs
Molecular classification
Stem cell, Progenitor cell
01

Overview

Airway basal progenitor cells are specialized epithelial stem/progenitor cells located along the basement membrane of the airway epithelium. They play a central role in maintaining airway homeostasis and mediating regeneration after injury by differentiating into various cell types that constitute the airway lining, including ciliated and secretory (goblet) cells. This regenerative process is essential for repairing damage to the protective epithelial barrier following insults such as infection, inflammation, or exposure to toxins. Their dysfunction or exhaustion is linked to impaired repair mechanisms as seen in COPD.
