Airway epithelial cell membrane

Molecular classification
Other (cellular membrane structure), Contains various integral membrane proteins (such as ion channels, transporters, receptors), Forms part of the epithelial barrier
01

Overview

The airway epithelial cell membrane is the boundary structure of airway epithelial cells in the respiratory tract, consisting of a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins, glycoproteins, and receptors. It underlies the critical barrier function of the airway epithelium, regulating permeability, preventing pathogen entry, participating in mucosal defense, and enabling selective transport and signaling. The membrane’s molecular complexes—tight junctions, adherens junctions, and associated cytoskeletal networks—ensure structural integrity and homeostasis. Disruption or dysfunction of this membrane contributes to airway diseases such as asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis via impaired barrier function, enhanced inflammation, and reduced antimicrobial defense.

Biological functions

Physical barrier—prevents pathogen, particulate, and chemical entryRegulation of permeability via tight/adherens junctionsSignal transduction—interacts with extracellular signals via membrane proteinsSecretion of defense molecules (antimicrobial peptides, cytokines)Host defense and immune regulation
03

Disease associations

Inflammation (dysfunction in membrane barrier increases susceptibility)Infection (membrane is a defense line against pathogens)Asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis (structural/functional changes in the membrane related to disease)
04

Safety considerations

Drugs that disrupt membrane integrity or barrier function can cause increased infection risk, inflammation, or local tissue toxicityAirway epithelial injury (from inhalants, toxins, or physical insult) may compromise repair and function
