Target intelligence / Profile preview
Airway epithelial cilia are motile, hair-like projections on the surface of airway epithelial cells. Their coordinated beating facilitates mucociliary clearance, removing inhaled particles and pathogens from the respiratory tract. Each cilium contains an axoneme with a "9+2" microtubule arrangement, and its movement is powered by dynein arms. Dysfunction of cilia leads to impaired clearance and contributes to obstructive lung diseases.
