Overview

The airway lining primarily refers to the epithelial cells that form a barrier along the respiratory tract. Modulation of this lining involves altering its structure, function, or signaling properties to impact airway health and disease states such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis. The airway epithelium acts as a frontline barrier between inhaled environmental agents (allergens, pathogens, pollutants) and underlying tissues. It maintains tissue homeostasis by regulating paracellular flux through tight junctions (TJs) and adherens junctions (AJs). Disruption or maladaptive modulation of the airway lining is implicated in various respiratory diseases.
