Airway Sensory Nerve C-Fiber (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Sensory Neuron, Nociceptor, Primary Afferent Neuron
01

Overview

Airway sensory nerve C-fibers are unmyelinated primary afferent neurons that innervate the respiratory tract and play a critical role in detecting noxious and inflammatory stimuli. They mediate defensive reflexes like cough and bronchoconstriction, and contribute to neurogenic inflammation via neuropeptide release. They are activated by chemical irritants, inflammatory mediators, and specific agonists like capsaicin, primarily through TRPV1 and TRPA1 channels. Overactivation or sensitization of these fibers is implicated in chronic respiratory diseases.
