AK2 antisense RNA 1 (AK2-AS1)

Target
AK2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Natural antisense transcript (NAT)
01

Overview

AK2 antisense RNA 1 (AK2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA thought to be transcribed antisense to the AK2 gene locus. As a natural antisense transcript, it may serve to regulate the expression of the AK2 gene or neighboring genomic elements, potentially through mechanisms such as RNA-RNA hybridization, transcriptional interference, or epigenetic modification. However, there is no current evidence that AK2-AS1 acts as a drug target, nor is there a well-established function, disease association, or pharmacological relevance described in the scientific literature. Most information on AK2-AS1 must be inferred from general properties of natural antisense lncRNAs, which are known to influence gene regulation in some contexts, but specific characterization of AK2-AS1 is lacking

02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. Mechanisms for antisense RNAs (in general) can involve inhibition of mRNA translation, promotion of mRNA degradation, or modulation of chromatin; no drug mechanism exists for AK2-AS1

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (inferred from antisense RNA function)Potential epigenetic regulation or RNA interference (general to NATs; specific role for AK2-AS1 is unreported)
