Overview

The akirin 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000106540) is a genomic sequence in the human genome that shares high sequence similarity with the functional Akirin 1 gene but contains disabling mutations or truncations rendering it non-coding and non-functional as a protein. Pseudogenes generally arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are classically regarded as "genomic fossils."[3][1] There is no known protein, no evidence of a coding transcript, and it is not cited as a therapeutic target or biomarker. Some pseudogenes can play a regulatory role at the RNA level, but there is no specific evidence for such a function for the akirin 1 pseudogene. All functional associations (such as muscle or immune regulation) pertain to Akirin 1, not its pseudogene derivative[4].
