Overview

AKNA domain containing 1 (AKNAD1) is a human protein encoded by the gene AKNAD1 (C1orf62, MGC26989), which contains a domain characteristic of AT-hook-containing transcription factors, although it is not itself a well-characterized transcription factor[1][3]. It is involved in several biological pathways, serving potential roles in endoplasmic reticulum-associated processes and cellular stress responses. AKNAD1 has shown disease relevance as a gene whose copy number variation is associated with type 2 diabetes and whose expression is implicated in both glioma prognosis and muscle differentiation under inflammatory conditions. It also features in multi-gene risk models for stratifying patient outcome in cancers, such as gliomas and HER2-positive breast cancer, thus suggesting use as a prognostic biomarker. There are no approved drugs known to directly interact with AKNAD1, and its precise functional mechanisms in health and disease remain incompletely understood[1][2][3].
