Alanine-serine-cysteine transporter 2 (ASCT2)

Target
ASCT2
Molecular classification
Solute Carrier Family 1, Transporter
01

Overview

Alanine-serine-cysteine transporter 2 (ASCT2), encoded by the SLC1A5 gene, is a sodium-dependent neutral amino acid transporter. It mediates the exchange of small neutral amino acids, primarily glutamine, alanine, and serine, across the plasma membrane. ASCT2 plays a crucial role in cancer metabolism by supplying glutamine for cell growth and proliferation and is a potential therapeutic target. While cysteine can bind, it is a potent inhibitor rather than a transported substrate. Inhibitors like GPNA and V9302 are being developed as anticancer agents.
