Overview

Albumin and plasma globulins are the two predominant classes of plasma proteins produced primarily in the liver (albumin and most alpha/beta globulins) and plasma cells (gamma globulins). Albumin makes up about 55-60% of plasma protein and maintains colloid osmotic pressure, transports a wide range of molecules including hormones, fatty acids, drugs, and is a reservoir of amino acids. Globulins, comprising alpha, beta, and gamma fractions, participate in immune defense (immunoglobulins), transport of iron and copper (transferrin, ceruloplasmin), and carry out regulatory and enzymatic functions. Their serum concentrations serve as biomarkers for liver function, nutritional status, and various diseases. While therapeutic interventions use albumin preparations in certain conditions, albumin and plasma globulins as a combined group are not a defined therapeutic molecular target.
