Alcohol dehydrogenase 6 (ADH6) is a class V enzyme in the alcohol dehydrogenase family responsible for the oxidation and reduction of a range of alcohols and aldehydes, including ethanol, retinol, and hydroxysteroids. Expressed predominantly in the liver and stomach, ADH6 contributes to detoxification and metabolic pathways. The gene contains regulatory elements for steroid hormone response, suggesting its expression can be modulated in specific physiological states. Its detailed substrate specificity and physiological role remain less characterized than other ADH family members, but it is implicated in general alcohol and aldehyde detoxification and associated disease risks.
NAD-dependent oxidation of primary alcohols to corresponding aldehydes, and secondary alcohols to ketones. Detoxification by oxidoreductase action prevents accumulation of toxic alcohols and aldehydes.
