Target intelligence / Profile preview

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 3 family member A2 (ALDH3A2)

Target
ALDH3A2
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Aldehyde dehydrogenase
01

Overview

ALDH3A2 encodes fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH), an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of medium and long-chain aliphatic aldehydes to fatty acids. This process is crucial for fatty acid metabolism and energy production. Mutations in ALDH3A2 cause Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, characterized by ichthyosis, neurological abnormalities, and eye problems, due to the accumulation of toxic fatty aldehydes.

02

Mechanism of action

Oxidation of medium and long-chain aliphatic aldehydes to their corresponding fatty acids, utilizing NAD+ as a cofactor.

03

Biological functions

Fatty acid oxidationDetoxification of aldehydesSphingolipid metabolism
04

Disease associations

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome
05

Safety considerations

Accumulation of fatty aldehydes due to loss of function can disrupt cell membrane formation and function.Potential for off-target effects if developing inhibitors that also affect other aldehyde dehydrogenases.
