ALDH3A2 encodes fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH), an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of medium and long-chain aliphatic aldehydes to fatty acids. This process is crucial for fatty acid metabolism and energy production. Mutations in ALDH3A2 cause Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, characterized by ichthyosis, neurological abnormalities, and eye problems, due to the accumulation of toxic fatty aldehydes.
