Overview

AKR1B1P1 is a pseudogene corresponding to the functional gene AKR1B1, which encodes the enzyme aldose reductase. Unlike its parent gene AKR1B1, AKR1B1P1 does not produce a functional protein product[6][7]. Pseudogenes such as AKR1B1P1 generally arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and have lost their ability to encode functional proteins due to mutations, truncations, or other sequence alterations[7]. There is no current evidence that AKR1B1P1 serves as a therapeutic target, nor is it known to be involved in biological pathways, disease mechanisms, or to interact with drugs. Nomenclature resources and annotation guidelines specify that pseudogenes are not to be annotated as functional molecular targets or as encoding any physiologically relevant proteins[6][7]. The functional form, AKR1B1, plays roles in detoxification and metabolism, but AKR1B1P1 itself is non-coding and lacks any characterized biological, clinical, or therapeutic relevance[6][7]. The existence of similar names between AKR1B1 (enzyme) and AKR1B1P1 (pseudogene) is a common source of confusion, but only AKR1B1 encodes an active enzyme; AKR1B1P1 does not[1][7].
