Aldo-keto Reductase Family 1 Member B1

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Aldo/keto reductase superfamily
01

Overview

Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1 (AKR1B1), also known as aldose reductase, is an enzyme that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of a wide range of aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding alcohols. It plays a role in the polyol pathway, reducing glucose to sorbitol, which is implicated in diabetic complications. It also reduces toxic aldehydes and participates in prostaglandin synthesis. AKR1B1 is implicated in diabetes, cancer, oxidative stress diseases and cardiovascular pathologies making it a therapeutic target.
