The aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1 pseudogene (ENSG00000223353) is a nonfunctional DNA sequence within the human genome, closely resembling the functional aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1 (AKR1B1) gene, which encodes the enzyme aldose reductase. As a pseudogene, it has accumulated disabling mutations or lacks regulatory sequences, resulting in the loss of protein-coding ability. Pseudogenes such as this one are not expressed as functional proteins and are generally considered nonfunctional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events in evolution. While some pseudogenes can sometimes play roles in gene regulation at the RNA level, there is no evidence that this particular pseudogene has any such biological function or clinical relevance.
