AKR1B1P2 is a processed pseudogene and a retrocopy of the functional gene AKR1B1, which encodes a member of the aldo-keto reductase enzyme superfamily involved in NADPH-dependent oxidoreduction reactions[1][7][9]. Pseudogenes like AKR1B1P2 are typically noncoding and considered biologically inert; however, recent research into analogous pseudogenes (such as AKR1B10P1 and PTENP1) suggests a minority may exert regulatory functions in cancer by acting as molecular sponges for miRNAs, potentially modulating gene expression of their parental genes and influencing tumorigenesis via ceRNA mechanisms[2][6]. There is currently no direct evidence of AKR1B1P2 playing a functional role in disease or drug response.
