Pseudogenes like AKR1B1P6 arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but typically lack the ability to code for a functional protein. There is currently no evidence that AKR1B1P6 encodes an active transcript or protein, nor is it implicated as a disease gene, therapeutic target, or biomarker. Its parental family, the aldo-keto reductases, are enzymes involved in various metabolic pathways, but AKR1B1P6 itself is classified as a non-functional pseudogene[3][4][5].
