Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B10 pseudogene 2 (AKR1B10P2) is a pseudogene, meaning it is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that closely resembles the protein-coding gene AKR1B10, but lacks the ability to produce a functional protein product. Pseudogenes typically arise via duplication or retrotransposition events and may lack key regulatory or coding sequences required for proper gene function. While most pseudogenes are regarded as nonfunctional, some can have regulatory roles, for example as sources of regulatory non-coding RNAs or as molecular sponges for microRNAs. The closely-related pseudogene AKR1B10P1 has been shown to have such a regulatory role in hepatocellular carcinoma, by acting as a ceRNA (competitive endogenous RNA) that can sponge miR-138 and thereby alter the expression of EMT-promoting genes; similar roles for AKR1B10P2 are not reported in the available literature. There are no drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns directly associated with AKR1B10P2. Given that AKR1B10P2 is a pseudogene, it is not considered a therapeutic target and has no known direct protein product or drug interactions. Some confusion can arise as pseudogenes are occasionally annotated as functional genes, but in this case, AKR1B10P2 is definitively identified as a pseudogene by major gene databases and scientific literature. Note: Most of the literature discussing biological function and disease relevance refers to AKR1B10 or its other pseudogenes (e.g., AKR1B10P1), but not explicitly to AKR1B10P2 itself. Therefore, any putative function is speculative and not established for AKR1B10P2.
