Overview

Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C1 (AKR1C1) is a cytosolic enzyme belonging to the aldo-keto reductase superfamily, which catalyzes the NADH- and NADPH-dependent reduction of aldehydes and ketones, particularly the conversion of progesterone to its inactive metabolite 20α-hydroxy-progesterone. This enzyme plays a critical role in steroid hormone metabolism, as well as in detoxifying endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. The gene is located on chromosome 10p15-p14 and shares high sequence identity with other AKR1C subfamily members[1][5].
