Overview

Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member E2 (AKR1E2) is a protein-coding gene encoding an enzyme of the aldo-keto reductase superfamily, noted for its highly conserved TIM barrel structure and its function as a NAD(P)H-dependent oxidoreductase of carbonyl groups. AKR1E2 catalyzes the reduction of 1,5-anhydro-D-fructose to 1,5-anhydro-D-glucitol and shows low activity toward some other substrates in vitro. It is predominantly expressed in human testis, with alternative splicing producing multiple transcript variants. AKR1E2 is associated with metabolic pathways such as glycogen and glycosaminoglycan metabolism and has been implicated in cataract and potentially other conditions, but currently, there are no widely reported drugs targeting this protein nor established roles as a biomarker or significant safety concerns[1][2][4].
