Aldosterone is the main mineralocorticoid steroid hormone produced by the zona glomerulosa in the adrenal cortex[1][2][3][7]. It is essential for sodium conservation in the kidney, salivary glands, sweat glands, and colon, and plays a central role in the homeostatic regulation of blood pressure, blood volume, plasma sodium, and potassium levels, primarily via action on the mineralocorticoid receptor[1][2][3][7]. Aldosterone increases sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion in renal tubular cells, indirectly affecting water retention and vascular volume. Dysregulation of aldosterone is implicated in hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and Addison’s disease[1][3][4]. Drugs targeting aldosterone or its signaling pathway—such as mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists—are used in the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, and related conditions[1][2]. Note: Aldosterone itself is not a therapeutic target entity such as a receptor or enzyme, but is a ligand/hormone that acts on the mineralocorticoid receptor.
