Overview

Allantoin is a naturally occurring *chemical compound* (C₄H₆N₄O₃), best known as a *metabolite* in the catabolism of purines, specifically as the oxidation product of uric acid in most mammals but not in humans. It is found widely in nature, particularly in plants like comfrey, and is present in high concentrations in the allantois of developing embryos, from which its name is derived. In medicine and consumer care, allantoin is commonly used as a skin protectant, moisturizer (humectant), and wound-healing enhancer. It softens keratin, promotes cell proliferation, facilitates tissue repair, and has anti-irritant and mild anti-inflammatory properties. Allantoin is widely incorporated in creams, lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, and oral care products. Clinically, allantoin is occasionally used as a biomarker for oxidative stress. It is not the target of pharmacological agents and does not act as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[2][3][4][5][7].
