Overview
An allergen is a typically harmless substance that can trigger an immune response in certain individuals, resulting in an allergic reaction. In these cases, the immune system mistakenly identifies the allergen as a threat and produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific to that substance. Upon subsequent exposures, these IgE antibodies bind to mast cells and basophils, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, which cause allergy symptoms.
