The allergen-specific immune response refers to the immune system's targeted reaction against otherwise harmless environmental substances known as allergens. This response is characterized by the production of allergen-specific antibodies (primarily IgE) and activation of T cells, leading to inflammation and clinical symptoms in genetically predisposed individuals. Allergen-specific immunotherapy aims at modulating this immune response: reducing pathogenic Th2 activity/IgE production while enhancing regulatory pathways such as increasing blocking antibodies like specific-IgG4 or expanding functional regulatory T-cell populations. This can lead to long-term tolerance against allergens rather than persistent hypersensitivity reactions.
