Allergen-specific immune response modulation refers to the targeted alteration of the immune system's reaction to specific allergens, aiming to reduce or eliminate allergic symptoms. This process is central to allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). The goal is to shift the immune response from a pathogenic (allergy-causing) state toward tolerance by suppressing Th2-driven processes while enhancing regulatory pathways. This involves changes in cellular immunity (T/B lymphocytes) and humoral immunity (antibodies).
Controlled allergen exposure to induce tolerance by suppressing Th2 responses and enhancing regulatory T cell function, leading to decreased IgE production and increased IgG4 production.
